Anna S. | Korean American

Born to a family from South Korea and raised in Los Angeles, Anna describes her identity as deeply rooted in both her Korean heritage and American upbringing. Being Korean American has meant balancing two worlds - honoring Korean traditions and family expectations while embracing the norms of life in America.
Growing up in Los Angeles gave her a strong sense of comfort in her heritage. Surrounded by a large Korean community and the city's rich diversity, she never felt disconnected from her culture during childhood. It wasn't until college, when she was in a predominantly white environment, that she became more aware of the differences between herself and those around her. As an adult she's learned how to assimilate into white American culture while still maintaining ties to her roots. It was experiences in the workplace as a woman minority that have had the most lasting impacts. Many of Anna's greatest challenges came in professional settings, where she had to learn how to speak up for herself and find her voice. Through those experiences, she developed confidence, resilience, and a stronger sense of self.
Despite those challenges, she measures success less by accomplishments and more by connection. She says she's most proud of the relationships she has built with her family and friends. And in regards to the future, she jokes that retirement is what she's most looking forward to.
When asked about the best advice she has ever received, her answer was simple: "Practice makes progress. You can't control the outcome, only your effort." It's a mindset that reflects both perseverance and grace.
