Why Representation in Beauty Matters: The Story Behind Hannah Cho Beauty

Why Representation in Beauty Matters: The Story Behind Hannah Cho Beauty

Back in 2009, tired of the lack of resources for eyes like mine, I picked up a camera and started my own YouTube channel.

There were no beauty brands speaking to people with monolids. There were barely any makeup tutorials that worked for my eye shape. So I became the resource I was looking for - testing every eyeliner, mascara, and lash I could find and sharing what worked (and what didn’t). What I didn't realize then, was that I was helping build something bigger: a safe space online for other Asian women who felt overlooked by the beauty world.

I felt like I grew up on YouTube - learning, evolving, and connecting. It was raw and real. In those early days, it felt like we were forging a new path on the internet, one where Asian features were finally seen, discussed, and celebrated.

Over the years, and still to this day, I have women come up to me and say:

“I used to watch you in high school or college...you helped me understand my eyes for the first time.”

That still means the world to me.

What started as makeup reviews and tutorials, turned into a deeper mission:
Inclusivity in beauty and representation in real life. When you don’t see yourself represented, you start to believe your features aren't beautiful. That’s why representation is at the heart of everything we do at Hannah Cho Beauty.

I spent over a decade growing that YouTube platform, listening to what we needed, and dreaming of a product that truly served us. Now, I finally have that: a line of lashes designed specifically for my eyes, and yours. But it's more than just lashes, it's about celebrating monolids, hooded eyes, epicanthic folds - all the gorgeous, diverse eyelid shapes within the Asian community.

Our products are thoughtfully designed, from the sizes, styles, and materials used:

  • Properly sized - no more trimming or reshaping needed.

  • Flattering and natural - enhancing, not overwhelming, your features.

  • Made with real hair for an authentic look and feel.

We don’t believe in plastic-looking, overly dramatic lashes. We believe in beauty that fits, flatters, and empowers. In a world that once told me my eyes were "different," I'm proud to say now:
My eyes are beautiful and so are yours.
